Spring and Summer Tramping in NZ: Pack Well, Leave Less Behind

Spring and Summer Tramping in NZ: Pack Well, Leave Less Behind

Longer days, warmer afternoons and a fresh list of tracks to explore. Spring and summer are a good excuse to pull out your pack and plan your next adventure, whether that means a short bush walk, a coastal day hike or a weekend away.

Enjoying the outdoors also means thinking about what we leave behind. A lower-waste hiking routine doesn’t need to involve replacing everything you own. Often, it starts with using what you already have, packing thoughtfully and bringing every bit of rubbish home.

At Gear & Glam, we’re fans of small, practical changes that make your bag easier to organise and your trail routine less dependent on disposable extras.

Start with the gear you already own

Before buying anything for the season, unpack last year’s hiking kit. Check your bag, layers, footwear and containers, then clean or repair what you can.

The most useful piece of gear isn’t always something new. It’s something you’ll use repeatedly, look after and remember to pack.

Choose a walk that suits your experience, check the forecast and current track information, and let someone know your plans. Longer daylight hours aren’t a reason to leave your rainwear or warm layers at home.

Give everything a place in your pack

Loose snacks, tangled cables and toiletries floating around the bottom of your bag can make even a short walk feel unnecessarily fiddly.

Organising small essentials into reusable pouches helps you see what you’ve packed and find it without emptying your bag beside the track. Our Mesh Travel Zipper Pouch Set can separate toiletries, cables and small accessories.

Keep rubbish in a separate, securely closed container or bag. Mesh pouches are organisers, not leakproof waste bags.

Pack smaller amounts, not more disposable containers

For an overnight trip, you rarely need a full-size bottle of every toiletry. Bringing only what you expect to use saves space and avoids buying a new set of miniature bottles for each weekend away.

Our Silicone Travel Bottles 3-Pack gives you refillable containers for suitable toiletries. Check that your chosen product is compatible with the container, label each bottle and clean it between trips.

Already have travel containers that work? Keep using them. The point is repeated use, not a whole new bathroom collection for your backpack.

Keep your washing routine away from waterways

A clear stream might look like the perfect place for a quick wash, but it isn’t a sink.

Keep soap, shampoo, toothpaste and washing water out of streams and lakes, even when a label describes a product as natural or biodegradable. Use designated washing facilities where available and follow the guidance for the place you’re visiting.

If you prefer a bar of soap, our Soap Bar Travel Case is a compact way to carry it between stops. It’s for storing your soap, not a reason to wash directly in the water.

Plan for toilet stops before you need one

Trail hygiene deserves a place on your packing list, especially when toilets are limited.

Use provided toilets whenever possible and check local guidance before heading into areas without facilities. Pack a securely sealable rubbish bag for used wipes, period products and other hygiene waste. Don’t leave these behind, even if the packaging says biodegradable.

For women who prefer a reusable option for drying after urinating, our Reusable Pee Cloth is one accessory to consider. It is not a substitute for toilet paper after bowel movements. Plan how you’ll store and clean it, follow its care instructions and keep washing water out of natural waterways.

A little preparation makes these stops less awkward and makes it easier to leave the area as you found it.

Separate damp gear from the rest

A rain shower, sweaty layer or campsite wash can leave you with damp items you don’t want mixed through your clean clothes.

Our Water-Resistant Wet/Dry Bag helps keep damp gear separate on the journey home. Unpack promptly afterwards and dry everything thoroughly before storing it.

Think of it as an organiser for damp clothing, not a guarantee that valuables will stay dry in heavy rain or if submerged.

Bring home the little things, too

Leaving less behind means more than taking your sandwich wrapper home. Fruit peels, tissues, snack crumbs and the tiny corners torn off packaging all count.

Before leaving your lunch spot, take a quick look around. Check under your pack, beside the log you sat on and around the place where you opened your snacks.

Stay on marked tracks, respect closures, give wildlife space and leave plants and natural objects where they belong. Follow any footwear-cleaning instructions at the trailhead rather than walking past them.

These habits matter more than having a perfectly coordinated kit.

Build a routine you’ll actually repeat

You don’t need a “zero-waste” label to make thoughtful choices outdoors. Start with one change that fits your next trip: reuse your snack container, refill a toiletry bottle, organise a hygiene pouch or remember a dedicated rubbish bag.

Then, when you get home, clean and repack your essentials so they’re ready for the next walk.

This spring and summer, aim for a pack that works for you and a trail that looks as though you were never there. Enjoy the views, take the memories and bring everything else home.

Gear & Glam’s practical travel and trail organisers can help you build that routine. Choose what fills a genuine gap in your kit, and keep using the gear you already love.
