What to Pack for a NZ Weekend Hike
Share
New Zealand's trails are world-class — from the Remutaka Cycle Trail to the Ben Lomond summit above Queenstown. But whether you're hiking or riding, being under-prepared can turn a great day out into a miserable one. Here's what to pack for a NZ weekend adventure.
1. A Reliable Carry System — Keep Essentials Within Reach
You need snacks, your phone, a rain jacket, and a first aid kit within easy reach — not buried in a backpack. A good handlebar bag (for cyclists) or a compact trail pouch (for hikers) keeps things accessible without slowing you down.
What to look for: Waterproof construction, enough compartments to stay organised, and a secure attachment so it doesn't shift on rough terrain.
2. UV Protection You'll Actually Wear
NZ has one of the highest UV indexes in the world. On a clear summer day, UV levels can hit extreme — and altitude makes it worse. Physical sun protection is your first line of defence on the trail.
- Wide-brim hat — UPF-rated fabric, full coverage for face and neck
- UV-protective arm sleeves — Lightweight, packable, and easy to pull on when the sun comes out
- UV sunglasses — Properly UV-rated, not just tinted
- Buff or neck gaiter — Doubles as sun protection and warmth at altitude
3. Layers — NZ Weather Doesn't Wait
Even on a clear summer day, NZ mountain weather can change in minutes. The difference between a comfortable summit and a miserable one is usually one extra layer.
- Moisture-wicking base layer — Merino wool or synthetic, not cotton
- Packable rain poncho or windproof shell — Takes up almost no space, can save your whole day
- Insulating mid layer — Fleece or puffer for alpine trails and rest stops
4. Hydration & Recovery
Staying hydrated on the trail is non-negotiable — and recovering well after means you'll be back out there sooner.
- Insulated water bottle or tumbler — Keeps water cold on hot days, warm drinks on cold ones
- Collapsible cup — Lightweight backup for stream crossings or hut water
- Cooling microfibre towel — Wet it, wrap it around your neck — instant relief on exposed summer ridgelines
- High-energy snacks — Nuts, dried fruit, muesli bars. Pack more than you think you need.
5. Stay Organised — The Details That Matter
- Waterproof dry bag or pouch — Protects your phone, camera, and valuables on wet-weather days
- Travel organiser or packing cubes — For overnight trips, a packing system saves time and keeps kit accessible
- Microfibre travel towel — Compact and fast-drying. Essential if your trail ends at a waterfall swim or hut shower
- First aid kit — Blister plasters, bandages, and pain relief at minimum
- Offline trail map — Cell coverage is patchy on most NZ trails. Download before you go.
